Introducing the organisation: The joined school of Saint Martyr’s of Košice is a reputable school in the region of Eastern Slovakia and consists of the following organisational units: kindergarten, elementary school, high school, elementary school of arts, children’s school club and a place for free-time activities. The school is located in a suburban area at the KVP (part of Kosice city) neighbourhood in Košice and serves the population of the neighbourhood and surrounding villages. The age spectrum of pupils is from 3 to 20 years.

The school is attended by pupils from marginalised communities, pupils of Romani nationality, children from low-income families or less stimulating environment, adopted children. The school is also attended by migrant children from Ukraine, Hungary. In the past, the school was attended by a pupil from the Philippines /data from the Central Register of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sports of the Slovak Republic/. The pupils have the ambition to educate themselves and participate in various educational, social, cultural, charitable and leisure activities.

One of the things necessary to achieve that is the availability to high-quality computer and communication-technology equipment. The school, in cooperation with monastic orders institutions organises fundraisers and activities to help the needy, and families with financial difficulties. It is our vision to provide the children from such underprivileged environment with high-quality education and space to realize meaningful activities throughout the whole day.

In an already busy school day, finding time for building character in schools and students can be a challenge. However, school is the first social structure the child encounters, and it provides an excellent opportunity for character-building.

School is not just about learning concepts; it is also a place where a foundation can be built for becoming upstanding adults. Every school should set a tone of respect, honesty and genuine kindness for all students. Whether they like it or not, teachers are role models for students and can provide examples of good character every day in the classroom. Students notice what teachers do, say, tolerate, and how they handle challenges.

Characteristics

There are several characteristics we could mention: adults embrace their critical role as models. Teachers work together as professionals—and with parents and community members as partners—to positively shape the social, emotional, and character development of the young people entrusted to them each day. Students in these schools feel safe, respected, and connected to those around them, allowing them to thrive academically and socially and be motivated to give back to their communities.

We cooperate with successful IT company NESS, Technical University in Kosice, Faculty of Natural Science Pavol Jozef Safarik University in Kosice.
